Andrews provide a modern alternative to aged R22 cooling system

The introduction of the Ozone Regulation in 2009 paved the way for a gradual shift away from air conditioning units that use refrigerant gas and other ozone depleting substances. This has since led to a widespread need for replacement systems to be sourced as businesses strive to comply with legislation.

So when one of our major clients based in central London decided to upgrade its cooling equipment to a more environmentally-friendly substitute, they approached us regarding a solution. At the same time, our customer’s premises were undergoing a renovation which involved being taken back to its original design – an open plan layout. read more

Kent-based office facilities have new VRV system installed

The modern office is becoming increasingly reliant on electrical technology as companies aim to maximise productivity via the various forms of hardware available. This fact alone causes the working environment to rise slightly in temperature, but combine it with a prolonged period of hot weather and conditions can quickly become unbearable.

Fortunately, one of our major clients in the South East sought to have an air conditioning issue rectified before the summer heat could affect their operations and staff. An ageing VRV cooling system had failed, leaving the entire premises without suitable cooling and at risk of causing employees to feel uncomfortable. read more

Sales Director takes on Highland Coast-to-Coast charity bike ride

While the Royal Wedding in 2011 meant that most of us enjoyed a prolonged Easter Bank Holiday, one Andrews Sykes employee instead opted to negotiate approximately 200 miles of off-road terrain on a mountain bike across some of the highest regions in England.

It took six days for Andy Whiteley to reach Robin Hood’s Bay on the Yorkshire coast, having initially begun his journey at St. Bees in Cumbria, crossing along the way The Lake District, Yorkshire Dales and North Yorkshire Moors National Parks. read more

Andrews Air Conditioning to exhibit at Facilities Show in mid-June

Following the incredible success of last year’s Facilities Show, we are delighted to confirm our attendance for a second successive summer. Between the 16th and 18th of June, we will be showcasing a broad range of products at stand Q1150 in the Excel Exhibition Centre and look forward to building links with suppliers and potential customers across the three days.

The event provides us with an excellent opportunity to interact with other businesses currently operating in the industry. Those in attendance will also have the chance to probe our highly-trained staff on the benefits a temporary cooling system, with a series of units on display for first-hand demonstrations. read more

Aviation services request refrigeration upgrade

As one of the UK’s leading providers of air conditioning and refrigeration services, our staff are used to working on even the most obscure applications. This was recently demonstrated when a specialist airport in Cambridgeshire sought replacement equipment after reporting the breakdown of its existing freezers.

Per industry requirements, aviation components are frequently tested at low temperatures – often us cold as -26°C – in order to establish whether any problems occur over a set period of time. read more

London hotel seeks solution for noisy air conditioning system

When a premier hotel located in Greenwich received complaints from guests regarding noise levels from the external air conditioning units, an immediate solution was required. In total, fifteen Mitsubishi VRF systems delivered heating and cooling to the hotel’s 157 guest rooms. This meant that a large number of clients could potentially be affected by sound emissions at any given time.

Following a detailed investigation, the first option outlined to our client was for us to install full acoustic attenuators to all condensing units, thus delivering a noise reduction of 12dB. However, as the disturbance was most noticeable at night a highly cost-effective alternative was for us to install a capacity control system, enabling the condenser fans to operate more quietly (by a further 5-7dB) – but at lower capacity – during periods of lower heating or cooling demand. read more

Birmingham bar upgrades fixed air conditioning system

When a bar in Birmingham suffered the complete breakdown of its ageing air conditioning system, it left the proprietor with a decision to make. Although repairing the existing equipment was initially discussed, it was eventually decided that it would be more cost-effective in the long term to install a replacement.

The new design was initially based on a two pipe heat pump system as recommended by the manufacturer. However further discussions with our specialist team led to some alternative proposals incorporating an improved, less obtrusive design. read more

Medicated tablet producer requests assistance

When a client in the pharmaceutical industry encountered problems with their fixed cooling system, their immediate thought was to contact the company that had originally installed it. It soon transpired that the contractor in question had succumbed to liquidation, meaning an alternative supplier was needed in order to rectify the issue.

Andrews Air Conditioning & Refrigeration were subsequently approached, and we sent a qualified technicial to survey the customer’s premises in Lancashire. Of the 12 Mitsubishi condensing units fitted inside the building, eight had damaged compressors. Several air handlers were also assessed as faulty, thus requiring a comprehensive solution to ensure the building could be adequately cooled once again. read more

Andrews Air Conditioning help preserve systems across the North East

As the UK’s number one provider of fixed air conditioning systems, we are exceptionally well-placed to oversee the upkeep of your equipment and ensure it continues to operate at full capacity. Maintenance is an essential requirement when owning permanent units, and if this is not conducted regularly then companies are likely to encounter difficulties sooner or later.

We were recently responsible for assessing the air conditioning in more than 350 sites across Scotland and the North East. A four-man service team visited each location within an eight week period, providing detailed reports on the functionality of every single system. read more

R22 phase-out deadline is now fast approaching

As from the start of 2015, the maintenance or repair of any air conditioning system using R22 refrigerant gas will become illegal as part of legislation outlined in the EC Ozone Regulations. The imminent ban on this chlorofluorocarbon (CFC) gas thus poses a very real threat to companies whose cooling equipment still uses ozone-depleting R22.

Despite service activities on this equipment being outlawed as from the new year, R22 remains one of the most common refrigerants in the UK, widely used in older chillers and air conditioning. Businesses will therefore be compelled to source more environmentally-friendly alternatives. Numerous companies are likely to be affected by the change, many of which are currently unaware of the implications. read more
